Vegas Dance Explosion, 2022 is in the books! Following is my recap and experience of my 2nd time attending this event and like last year a fairly exhaustive recap and round-up of all that happened!
Vegas Dance Explosion is one of many line dance conventions that take place throughout the year and the world, but it’s a big one! These conventions are the place to be to get in on what is new and upcoming in the line dance world. My friend Jeannie explained it this way to me: Some people “wait for the DVD,” while others line up on the opening night to be the first to see a new movie.
In the line dance world, these conventions are how to be the first to dance the new stuff!

What is the Vegas Dance Explosion?
Vegas Dance Explosion is a yearly 6-day, 6-night event of line dance workshops, open dancing (dance parties!), and special shows put on by the instructors themselves. Recently held from November 8-13, 2022 once again in the Westgate Hotel, Las Vegas. Attendees enjoy classes & open dancing spread throughout 6 large ballrooms with wooden dance floors from 9 am on into late night.
The organizers of the event are Doug & Jackie Miranda. The Mirandas have been organizing the event for many years and truly put on an amazing event, well worth the price of admission.
There are 6 dedicated ballrooms, 4 used for workshops that cater to all levels of dancers, one large “lobby” area dance floor for open dancing, and one floor for practicing and competition. The lobby dance floor features a DJ that takes requests all day and night for open dancing even when the workshops are taking place. This offers a great option to take a break from learning something new to just dancing to all your old favorites.
My Vegas Dance Explosion Week!
Like last year, at VDE, I got a little star-struck to see all these very famous and accomplished choreographers all in one place. And as the week seems to just fly by it’s hard to actually meet and chat with them all, but I did get a chance to chat with a few more which was great as they are all so kind and approachable.
I also upped my game a little this year as to how many workshops I attended, taking 3 more than I did last year. I think it’s cool to attend a line dance event like this and keep a little eye on Copperknob simultaneously. It’s cool to be learning new line dances from the choreographers at the same moment that their new dance is blowing up and being discovered around the world!
Of all the choreographers that frequent this event, I’m a big fan of Jo Thompson-Szymanski’s workshops, and got to 3 of her workshops:
Never Fool Me (I), 6’s to 9 (I), and her Technique Workshop.
I noticed something new from Jo’s classes this year: “looking circles!” She would often come down off of the stage and have us all circle around her as she demonstrated the dance or a particular portion of it! I liked this, since it sort of stops you from trying to do it and just watch for a moment. But also it gives you a better view if you were way in the back!
And also since we danced her classic line dance Dizzy, she did a lesson for it in the practice dance floor area. I loved this since I still am working on this dance! And she did another “looking circle” to help us see how to do it.
But then, of course, I also took 13 more! In all, I attended workshops from Roy Verdonk, Adia Dance, Rebecca Lee, José Miguel Balloque Vane, Darren Bailey, Amy Bailey, Britt Beresik, and Ruben Luna. But there were so many more! The event featured 19 choreographers in total. But I’ll get into the numbers of the event in a little bit.
So, for me, I attended a total of 16 workshops, learning 16 dances in total, along with a great Country Swing class taught by Adia Dance.
Late-Night Dance Parties!
Of special note about the event is the dance parties at night! 3 of the dance floors keep the dancing going late into the night. Last year I bugged out pretty early and just got some sleep, but this year I tried to hang in there a little longer and just have more fun! Below is my video compilation of some great moments when the late-nighters proved their love of dance with continued dancing into the night.
If you watch this all the way through you will see some of the choreographers as well. It was cool to see José Miguel (of the Netherlands) out there leading the way as everyone danced his and Guillaume Richard’s (of France) new dance Jumanji as they were also joined by Jo Thompson Szymanski, Grace David, Laura Bartolomei, and Rebecca Lee, other great choreographers at VDE. The Sphinx dance also was practiced as well as many others the late-night dancers were requesting. Check it out!
Not One, But TWO Flash Mobs!
This year we also participated in another flash mob in the lobby of the Westgate Hotel. But, wait! Not just once, but twice. Both Friday and Saturday in the lunchtime hour we showed the hotel-casino guests what many of the week’s guests were up to and what this “Dance Explosion” was all about!
This year we danced Gives Me Shivers & Dizzy! And not just once, but each day after a couple of minutes the song started again for an encore! So, 4 line dances in the hotel lobby altogether. I think the energy just really goes up when you’re basically performing to the surprised crowds around you.

Dance Levels
Of the 112 Dances taught 7 levels of difficulty were covered. I created a similar comparison last year and noticed there were more improver dances this year and in general, you can see that the dances are really evenly distributed across all the dance levels. There is something for everyone! Here’s the breakdown shown with a pie chart and table showing how many dances at each level:

Like subsequent years, VDE’s cool theme this time did not disappoint! This year the theme was steampunk! Such a great opportunity for dressing up and also creating a really fun steampunk-themed showcase for us on Saturday night! And…We’re Done! Vegas Dance Explosion Is a Wrap!
Wow! What a week it was at Vegas Dance Explosion. My brain is mush after trying to learn so many line dances and so many challenging ones like the Copperknob #1 line dance Sphinx. Also Jumanji, I’m Fabulous, 6’s to 9’s, and others. Late-night dance parties, showcases, and just hanging out, and finishing with Irish Boots at the end was very cool.
