Montana’s is a very beloved country dance venue established in 2000. It has one of the biggest dance floors in all of Southern California and sees big crowds every weekend. The dance hall is open just Friday and Saturday nights and is DJ only. Jeremy, the DJ is great, and he generally plays very traditional country music for the Two Steppers, but when it comes to line dances, he will call all the local favorite staples and also include interesting alternative songs for line dances at times.

Montana’s is dimly lit, but has a great sort of log cabin motif and feels super homey. For people that don’t want to dance so much there are pool tables and plenty of seating for hanging out or watching the dancers. A long bar also provides drinks all night long. The cover charge is collected cash only, but they’ll let you run in and use the ATM if needed!
Something interesting about the dance floor is there is a stage area where they have had live entertainment in the past, but now is just an extra place dancers. If a song can be danced with a line dance and partner, often times some couples will run up on to this raised area behind the dance floor and dance. Or if there’s two versions for a line dance, its a great way to split the floor!
More about Montana’s Dance Lessons
Like many dance halls, Montana’s is great about providing free dance lessons both Friday & Saturday nights. Lyndee & Marlene who are excellent instructors share Friday’s and Dev Edwards teaches every Saturday. In the past when I have taken lessons there, I’ve really enjoyed it. When they teach the Two Step, while it is a beginner Two Step lesson, what I’ve enjoyed about it is that toward the end they include a slightly more challenging pattern to learn. The lesson becomes a little more intermediate and gives something to even some of the more experienced dancers.

I’ve spent many nights at Gaslamp hanging out with friends and dancing. It’s mainly line dancing, but DJ Coral throws in some Two Step songs as well as some Cha Chas or Texas Time for the partners. The dance floor is relitively small, but accomodates the crowd. It’s a great community of dancers, some of which also frequent Cowboy Country also in Long Beach. Gaslamp gives them an extra night to dance!

5. The Cowboy Palace in Chatsworth
The Cowboy Palace, like Cowboy Country in Long Beach, considers itself “the last real honky-tonk.” I think both are great examples of what a honky-tonk is! But, in the case of Cowboy Palace, you have a honky tonk bar that to me seems extra special.
The great decor and authentic western look, has led it to be featured in several country-western music videos as well as TV shows and continues to be so. The most famous is probably Toby Keith’s I love this bar. Cowboy Palace, when it comes to coutry western bars is just a magical place. How do I know? I checked it out for myself! Click here to read my review!
Cowboy Palace is open 5 nights a week (Sunday, Wednesday-Saturday). The bar has line dancing all nights, with lessons for either line dancing or partner dancing every night of the week! Every night open features live music!
